Biography

Andy Warhol, born in Pittsburgh to Slovak immigrants, was a successful commercial illustrator before turning in 1961 and 1962 to Campbell's Soup Cans, Coca-Cola bottles and silkscreened portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Liz Taylor. The silkscreen let him mass-produce images of celebrity, consumption and death, from the Death and Disaster series to the Electric Chairs. His Factory studio, films, Interview magazine and later commissioned portraits made him the model of the artist as brand. Warhol is the largest market among post-war artists, with about 30,000 lots offered in 27 years. Shot Sage Blue Marilyn holds the record for a 20th century work at auction, while prints and portraits provide constant daily liquidity.
