Biography

David Hockney, born in Bradford, emerged from the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s as a leading figure of British Pop. Moving to Los Angeles in 1964, he painted swimming pools, sunlit houses and double portraits such as Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, and Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, which made him one of the most popular living painters. Later he explored photographic joiners, opera design, vast Yorkshire landscapes and iPad drawings made in Normandy. He died in London in June 2026, aged 88. His market is very deep, from prints and iPad editions to museum-level canvases, and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) set his record at 90.3 million dollars in 2018.
