Biography

Joan Miró was a Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist whose sign language of stars, birds and biomorphic shapes made him one of the founders of Surrealist abstraction. After moving to Paris in 1920 he joined the circle of André Breton and developed the dream paintings of the mid-1920s, the most sought-after phase of his career. His later monumental canvases, murals and public sculptures influenced Abstract Expressionism. For the market, Miró combines great depth of supply, from prints to major oils, with a top tier that is rare and fiercely contested: in May 2026 Portrait de Madame K. (1924) set a new auction record at Christie's New York, beating the previous high by over 13 million dollars.
