Biography

Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881 and active mainly in France, co-founded Cubism with Georges Braque and reshaped painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics over a career of more than seventy years. His enormous output, estimated at tens of thousands of works, means he appears at auction more often than almost any other modern master, from prints and ceramics to museum-grade canvases. For the market he is the benchmark blue-chip name: his works hold the records for several categories, his portraits of muses such as Marie-Thérèse Walter and Dora Maar draw global bidding, and his 1955 Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) sold for about 179.4 million dollars in 2015, still his public auction record.
